These are all unfinished wood, not polished, laminated, or varnished. Some sides may be uneven and not smooth. This is just normal.
Engraving can be light or dark-colored depending on the part of the wood engraved. Engraving doesn't mean to be always dark colored, as long as it's burnt.
Also, you might notice a "black ash" when you touch the engraved area. Just gently scrub it off. Since this is burnt wood, this might happen.
