UV Prints on MDF Boards with a 3d frame illusion, a technique known as Trompe-l'œil
Trompe-l'œil in French means" to deceive the eyes."
Ancient Roots
The concept of Trompe-l'œil dates back to Ancient Greece. One famous story involves a competition between Zeuxis and Parrhasius (5th century BCE):
Zeuxis painted grapes so realistically that birds tried to eat them.
Parrhasius painted a curtain so convincingly that Zeuxis tried to draw it aside, realizing he had been fooled.
Romans also used illusionistic techniques in wall paintings, especially in Pompeii, where frescoes often mimicked architectural elements or open windows.
Renaissance Revival
The technique saw a revival during the Italian Renaissance (15th–16th centuries) as artists explored perspective and realism.
Artists like Andrea Mantegna used foreshortening and architectural illusionism, notably in the Camera degli Sposi (Mantua, 1470s).
